Last weekend Worcester United’s first and second teams travelled to Wellington to take on the home side in T20 league opening matches.
In the main game that started at 14:00, Worcester United lost the toss and was sent in to bat by Wellington in overcast, cold and windy conditions.
Javier Visser was the first man to go and scored only 8 off 12 balls with 2 fours. The captain of the team.. Adrian du Toit, was the next batsman in and from the onset controlled the bowling and scored freely and at will.
He was rampant and cut the Wellington bowling to pieces. Du Toit scored an impressive 90 of only 53 balls, which included 7 fours and 7 sixes. Geraldo Cremon 30 of 20 balls (1 fours and 3 sixes) and Charlton Fransman 27 of only 12 balls (3 sixes) were the other notable contributions. Du Toit and Fransman were brutal in a 50 runs partnership off only 18 balls. After the departure of Du Toit, United lost wickets at regular intervals.
United went on to score 197/8 in their allotted 20 overs. Wellington’s best bowlers were Byron Fortuin who took 3/22 of 4 overs and Justin Felix 2/41 of his 4 overs. The rest of the Wellington bowlers came in for some heavy punishment.
Wellington lost their first wicket very early when Ruben Minnaar was clean bowled by Charlton Fransman for a duck. Lindley Hendricks and JJ Lambrecht put up some resistance before Hendricks had to go for 11 off 9 balls (1 four and 1 six) and Lambrecht, who struggled for 10 of 25 balls (1 four). Yuan Claasen also weighed in with 13 of 19 balls with one four. Roche du Plooy provided some excitement at the end with a quick 17 off 16 balls, which included one four and one big six. Wellington were all bowled out for a disappointing 80 in 19 overs. Marshin Jeftha performed the best with the ball and took 3/15 of his 4 overs. He was assisted by Charlton Fransman 2/6 of 3 overs, Christo Lukas with 3/20 of 4 overs and the experienced Bjorn Cochrane with 2/10 of 3 overs.
Worcester United won the match with a massive 117 runs and totally outclassed Wellington.
This was again another solid performance by Worcester United with both bat and ball and augurs well for the rest of the season.
The Worcester United second team, marred by late withdrawals, however, lost against their counterparts. United, after losing the toss was sent into the bet and managed to scramble 126 together off their 20 overs.
