Trio to entertain with great variety
The Worcester Music Society starts the year with the clarinet, cello and piano trio Goede Hoop.
The trio will present a vary varied programme of music, ranging from the lyrical music of Beethoven and Saint-Saens, through the sultry Tangos of Piazolla, to the exuberant Klezmer music of eastern Europe.
The trio of friends Matthew Reid, Cheryl de Havilland and Tertia Visser Downie have played together for many years, which is how the best music is made. Matthew Reid, the clarinettist has performed a number of times in Worcester before. Reid has also won many awards over the years and has played both nationally and internationally. He was the musical director of Cape Town’s annual Yiddish Song Festival for 11 years. A recitalist and freelance musician, he has arranged and directed the music for several shows at festivals in the country and won a Kanna award with pianist Pieter van Zyl at the KKNK.
Born in London, Cheryl de Havilland began playing the cello at the age of eight. Two years later she won a bursary to study music at the Royal College of Music and then later went on to study cello with Thomas Igloi and Lillip Phillips at the Royal Academy of Music. She also has extensive experience playing chamber music and held the position of the cellist in the Cape Town String Quartet for five years, giving concerts both in South Africa and overseas in Chile.
Tertia Visser Downie is an accomplished South African pianist who has studied under national and international piano masters. With an honours degree in music at Stellenbosch University as well as Unisa Performers’ and Teachers’ Licentiates with distinction, she has given numerous solo recitals in South Africa and internationally.
Her talent is extremely versatile and in 2009 she joined renowned poet Philip de Vos on a national tour of stage, radio and television performances. Trio Goede Hoop will be playing at the Innovation for the Blind Porter Street Auditorium on Thursday 28 February at 19:00.
Tickets will be available at the door, and costs R100 for adults and R50 for students. For any enquiries contact 082 562 7157.
