Touws River people pick litter up
With pure-hearted patriotism, the community of Touws River came together on 24 September to celebrate Heritage Day by picking up litter and braaiing boerewors rolls.
This initiative was conceived and driven by the Touws River Tourism Association, which largely funded the project, its proceeds received through its Gateway Getaway competition and donations by local businesses.
The objective was to support not only tourism by cleaning up Touws River, but also to support the local community by getting everyone to work together towards one goal: a tourist-friendly Touws River.
It was the hope of Touws River Tourism to get the community to pick up 2 021 black bags of litter for Heritage Day, and in return for their dedication, each person picking up litter was rewarded with a boerewors roll and a cup of Coca-Cola.
This project was an immense success and was only possible through cooperation and support from volunteers, local businesses and dedicated persons who all share a love for Touws River, its beauty, history and heritage.
Members of the association donated over R67 000 in prizes to the Touws River Tourism Gateway Getaway Competition, which closed today, 30 September. Various nutrition supplement projects arose and were funded through donations received for this competition.
It was through these generous donations and donations received from local businesses that the Touws River Tourism Association was able to provide 4 000 hotdogs to good-hearted inhabitants for the cleaning services rendered.
The results of this successful project is very noticeable as you drive through Touws River and the mountain of rubbish collected is a true testimony of what can be achieved through cooperation.
“We strongly believe our objective to collect 2 021 black bags of litter was surpassed by far and it is our hope to have the Spring Clean Project instated as an annual event,” TRTA says.
The Touws River Tourism Association would like to thank all the parties who made this project possible through their generous contributions. The Community Work Programme’s workers played an integral part in ensuring the clean-up was executed in an orderly fashion and they thank each person for their time dedicated on a public holiday.
Lastly, they would like to thank every participant who helped clean up Touws River.
“You are all truly exemplary people who took responsibility towards ensuring our town remains a beautiful tourism attraction,” the spokesperson said. “It is, after all, our Touws River, our community that benefits, our heritage and our future. We hope to see you all again at the next clean-up.”
