Viva Pink! Girls Hockey Team raises money for Cancer
The Traveling Pinks is an invitational hockey team made up of girls from various schools in eMalahleni who play matches in an attempt to raise awareness and money for Cancer and other charities.
The team started earlier this year when a Witbank school organized to play against a team from Nelspruit as a pre-season friendly. Due to other holiday commitments, some girls were unavailable to play and girls from other schools in the city were called up to fill in the gaps. After a successful campaign in Nelspruit, parents considered the possibility of keeping the new hockey team active.
It was soon discovered that one of the girls mothers, Mrs Claasen, was in the middle of chemotherapy and radiation treatment and her fighting spirit definitely affected the hockey girls and even influenced their team name.
Hey, lets keep this team going, said one of the parents. We can be called the Traveling Pinks!
Until recently, the Pinks had never lost a game. Their fighting spirit pushed them on in games which they seemed to dominate wherever they played. In Durban the mixed u/12 and u/13 team faced KZN Coastals u/13 A team. A late goal in the game saw the Pinks suffer their first loss. Out of more than 20 games played, even losing against one of the best u/13 sides in the country was an impressive achievement.
The Pinks managed to raise R 20 000 for Cancer this past school holiday on their tour to Durban. They have become the team to play in South Africa!
