Meet Witbank’s Ladies Golf Club Captain – Elaine Owen
Ladies Captain at the Witbank Golf Club, Ms Elaine Owen, is exactly what you expect: Prim, Proper and well spoken.
She’s well organised, extremely friendly and has a lovable personality. She’s really busy too.
“The Witbank Golf Club is probably the most accommodating when it comes to hosting visitors, members, and just about everybody, The facilities are always up to standard, there’s rental carts available – which are at a special price on Mondays (R50), helpful and friendly caddies are always available, and there’s a Pro- Shop,” says Elaine.
“Best of all though, is our beautifully designed course. It can be challenging at times due to an abundance of trees, but it makes the game all the more enjoyable”.
Elaine is originally from Scotland and emigrated to South Africa in 1989 when her husband started work at a mine. It was in 1992 that they moved to Witbank.
But Elaine started playing Golf only in 2007, motivated by her husband and taught the skill by the then manager of the Pro-Shop.
And like countless others, Elaine says, ‘the bug bit’ and Golf has now become part of her lifestyle, an insatiable pass-time that has evolved into her full time job at the Witbank Golf Club, where she now reigns as Ladies Captain.
“It happened quite all of a sudden, actually. I was nominated first as vice-captain, and accepted. Before I knew it, well, here I am as captain”. Elaine’s handicap is 13: “But its improving at a steady pace,” she quips.
When she’s not assisting with the general day to day tasks that keep Witbank Golf Club running smoothly, she’s assisting visitors in making the most of their nine or 18 hole game.
She also helps organize the weekly competitions hosted at Witbank Golf Club as well as other events such as the Ridges Ladies Golf Day and the Sunshine Tour.
