Copper cables being replaced in Paarl CBD
A municipal electrical infrastructure replacement project is currently under way in Lady Grey Street.
Three 185 mm² copper cables which were installed and commissioned during the 1949s as part of the first electrical supply from Eskom to Paarl, are now being replaced as result of age and to ensure supply security to the central business area.
According to Dirk Hattingh, responsible for the infrastructure services of Drakenstein Municipality, the project is funded by the municipality to the value of R11 million.
The cable replacement route will be from Meul Street down the centre island area of Lady Grey Street, right into the Western side of Berg River Boulervard and into the Outuin Substation which is adjacent to the taxi rank. The estimated completion date for the project has been scheduled for end of July.
- Residents are asked to be patient while the upgrading is being done. During the weekend copper cables that belongs to a telecommunication company to the value of R30 000 were stolen.
According to police spokesperson Capt. Louise du Plessis, the cables were dug up in two different areas in the Paarl area where construction work is taking place.
The public is urged to report any suspicious persons in the area to the police or security companies, Du Plessis said.
