Parys – An exceptional place to visit!
Situated on the R59, Parys is one of the most frequented highveld weekend venues.
The charming town of Parys is situated along the banks of the Vaal River and was established in 1876 by the Van Coller brothers on Klipspruit Farm. It is the agricultural center for the farming community of the area as well as a base for the many resorts, which have been built on the Islands nearby.
The town was romantically named by its surveyor, Schilbach, who was reminded of the French town of Paris, which was similarly situated along the banks of the river Seine. This area has become one of the most popular destinations along the Vaal River.
The Vaal, with birds abound, is studded with tree-covered islands of which several have been developed into pleasure resorts. Boating, fishing and swimming provide endless opportunities for relaxation.
In the vicinity, there are lovely parks, gardens and picnic spots. From lying peacefully under the shade of a tree – to ripping through the wake of powerful motorboats on a pair of skis – Parys accommodates it all!
Parys is essentially a farming community – tobacco, corn, sorghum and cattle are all farmed in the vicinity – but it has also become a popular town to visit, particularly because of its proximity to Johannesburg.
Where the Vaal River meets the town, it stretches for about a kilometer, its shores lined with weeping willows and an invitation to those fond of water sports.
One of the most unique features of Parys is Golf Island, which is only approachable via a suspension bridge & is home to a spectacular 18-hole golf course, open all year round.
The suspension bridge was constructed in 1919 & built high enough to allow access to the island, even when the river is in flood.
The town center of Parys developed over a number of years into an authentic tourism paradise with interesting knick-knack corners, art, antique & coffee shops & visiting places. Parys, with all the amenities & luxuries of a modern city, has retained the “magical charm” of small town atmosphere offering a happy medium between old world country charm & adventurous outdoor activities.
Water sport activities include river rafting, water skiing, canoeing, angling & power boating. Abseiling & gliding facilities & 4×4 routes are also available in Parys.
Visitors can also choose between a variety of Hiking Trails taking them into the hilly countryside surrounding Parys incorporating game viewing, bird spotting, viewing the remains of diamond diggings along the river & exploring the many battle sites within the vicinity.
The Parys Museum focuses on cultural, historical & geological features but it’s the geological wonders of the Vredefort Dome; the oldest and largest meteorite impact site in the world; that are without doubt the stars of the show.
