Why is it so challenging to quit drugs?

If you are addicted to a drug, you have probably tried to quit “on your own,” and also probably failed to do so. Research shows that most drug-dependent individuals believe that can stop using on their own and they try to stop without outside help.
Although some may be successful in quitting without treatment or outside support, research shows the vast majority fail to achieve long-term abstinence.
What those who have become addicted do not realize is their long-term drug use has actually made significant changes in their brain function which continue long after they quit using. Their use of drugs may have changed the brain’s reward system so that they have a compulsion to continue to seek and use drugs even when it is their best intention to stop.

Relapse Prevention Tips

The most important moment before relapse is not the final decision to use the substance.
It is when you decide to expose yourself to triggers. It is best to avoid situations and people that could trigger a relapse. These are a few examples for when you are starting out in recovery:

1. Stay away from relationships you’ve found difficult in the past.
2. Avoid family and friends, who have enabled you in the past.
3. Stay away from the people you used to drink, drug, gamble, or have casual sex with.
4. Keep away from bars, clubs, casinos, or places, where you used to hang out using the substance.
5. Understand what your body feels like when you are stressed, afraid, or depressed.

Mural With A Message of Hope

During SANCA’s Drug Awareness Week, 23-30 June, the SANCA After care group, in partnership with the Dove Art Centre, completed a community project to transform the outside wall of the clinic, bordering Einstein Street in Vanderbijlpark. The art work is complex and intriguing, and aimed at raising awareness on substance misuse. The design was created by artist, Linzey van der Westhuizen from the Dove Art Centre. The mural represents the journey of addiction; it embraces two aspects, the dark side of addiction, and the light at the conclusion of recovery. Substance dependence is a complicated issue, hence the multifaceted mural, which purpose is to give an insight into the addict’s world and to explain the ongoing battle that an addict faces on a daily basis. SANCA invites the community to come an experience this inspirational art work. Maybe this artistic message can motivate people to choose life and grasp the opportunity of addiction treatment at SANCA Vaal Triangle.

Promac paints in Silvertondale, Pretoria generously sponsored the paint. SANCA Vaal would like to thank all the role players, who participated and contributed. By gaining an understanding into the difficulties related to substance abuse, we take a step closer to reduce the incidence of substance dependency within our country.
