Midvaal condemns illegal bypassing of water and electricity meters
MEYERTON.- The Midvaal Local Municipality (MLM) has said that it notes with concern an increase in the number of cases found where ratepayers have bypassed their water or electricity meters.
“This is an illegal act and carries a hefty fine of approximately R30 000 which depending on whether you have single or three phase power.”
MLM said that Illegal water meter by-passing is when a client joins the t-piece to the residentially connected municipal pipe to bypass consumption monitoring.
MLM further said that on average Council loses about 75% of potential income on bypassed meters, sometimes consumers turn meters around to prevent actual readings.
“There are various ways of bridging electricity meters, all of which are illegal. The municipality would like to urge community members to report any suspicion of bypassing by any Rate Payer to the following contacts:
