Independent candidates can now contest general elections
JOHANNESBURG – In a landmark judgment, the Constitutional Court has ruled the Electoral Act unconstitutional.
The judgment means that independent candidates may now run in provincial and national elections. Political parties were only allowed to contest polls provincially and nationally. Independent candidates were only permitted to contest for local government.
NGO New Nation Movement wanted the electoral act to be amended to allow independent candidates to run in provincial and national elections.
