Proud Dog Salon – Are You Thinking of Buying a Puppy?
Keeping a dog as a pet is an absolute joy! They are loyal companions, can provide endless amusement and will soon become the main focus of the families affections. However, there are certain things to consider when choosing what breed of dog you want.
For example, a Golden Retriever will require plenty of daily exercise, so having a garden to run in would be advantageous. This breed is very responsive to training and generally they are very protective of small children. Rottweilers are often purchased for protection and security. However, these dogs are immensely powerful, and proper training by an experienced dog handler is essential. Small lap dogs such as a Chihuahua can be great companions, although they will also need exercise as they are an active breed.
The dogs coat should also be taken into consideration and some breeds such as the Afghan hound require daily combing and brushing besides a regular monthly groom at a professional dog salon. Alternatively, you may want to rather consider a Kerry Blue Terrier who has a non-shedding, curly coat and will only require to be professionally groomed every six to eight weeks, whereas the Airedale Terrier has a stiff and denser type of hair that will require a monthly visit to your local dog salon. The Jack Russel is probably one of the most intelligent breeds but they shed hair constantly.
Remember that a dog is for life which can mean anything up to 15 human years. Try to purchase your puppy when he or she is between six to eight weeks old. A healthy puppy is usually happy to be picked up. Try to watch the puppy in its litter as this will give you an idea of their temperament.
Be sure to check that your puppy is healthy. Start with lifting the ear flaps to see is the ear is pink inside, with neither and unpleasant odour nor any sign of crusty or waxy discharge, as this can indicate ear mites. Also check that the ear-flaps hang evenly. To check the teeth and the gums, place your one hand under the jaw and the other on top and gently lift the lips to expose the gums and tongue, which should both be pink in colour and have no unpleasant odour. Your puppy’s eyes should be clear, bright and free from any discharge with no sign of redness, squinting or inflammation. If your puppy keeps pawing at his/her eyes, they may have an eye irritation. Lift the tail to check the anal area, which should be clean and dry. If the puppy drags the rear along the floor, or licks the area a lot, this may indicate an irritation caused by blocked anal glands.
Lastly, be sure to do a thorough check on the puppy’s breeder and insist on seeing the puppy’s parents.
