Furever Pet Rescue

Furever Pet Rescue is a newly formed NPC (November, 2013) which started taking form prior to successful registration. Furever Pet Rescue was formed for the purpose of providing services to domestic animals in need in areas along the North Coast of KwaZulu-Natal. By forming a NPC the directors aim to give structure, stability and ongoing funding to the rescue efforts while expanding them to cover a larger geographical base.

The efforts of Furever Pet Rescue are funded by the directors and donors. The directors and other volunteers all donate their time and expertise as well to keep the organisation running successfully. 

Our organisation affirms that communities benefit from balanced, healthy and happy dog and cat populations. That means that every dog and cat should have enough food, water and basic veterinary care along with access to shelter, exercise and companionship.

As Furever Pet Rescue has no physical place to act as a shelter, we are only able to rescue those animals for which we have already successfully sourced foster or adoptive homes.

The objectives of Furever Pet Rescue are to provide the following services in the areas of Groutville, Stanger, Tinley Manor Beach, Etetie, Tshawini, Melville, Gledhow, Shakaskraal, Glendale, Salt Rock, Chaka’s Rock, Ballito and Tongaat: 

• Provide critical veterinary services (when sick, injured or suffering), food and water for stray and/or abandoned domestic animals.
• Source foster & permanent adoptive homes for stray and/or abandoned domestic animals.
• Source discounted veterinary rates for those who want to provide proper medical care to their pets but can’t afford it assuming they provide sufficient and adequate proof of financial hardship.
• Provide education and outreach to end the cycle of neglect and abuse and raise the standards by which people care for their animals.

Adoption Criteria
To adopt an animal from Furever Pet Rescue, you will need to meet our criteria. This includes a face-to-face meeting with you, as well as an inspection of your home and property. There is also an adoption fee charged of R700.00 which partially covers the cost of initial vaccination/s, de-worming, flea and tick treatment and sterilization. It is our policy that all our animals are sterilised at an appropriate age & time in an attempt to safely control the animal population in the areas we serve.

Adoption Process
At Furever Pet Rescue, we are committed not only to rehabilitating and re-homing our dogs, but to finding a great match between each animal and their new family. We take into account the breed of the animal along with its background, temperament and personality, and try to find them the most suitable environment.

Follow these steps to make sure you’re ready for the responsibility and commitment that comes with providing care and companionship to an animal.

Step 1 – Do your research. Ensure you understand the impact an animal will have on your household. Better to find out now before you commit! Information and opportunities are also available for those interested in volunteering to foster an animal in need.

Step 2 – Make the right match. Knowing the characteristics of the animal you want (or think you may want) will help when making your decision about which animal to bring into your family.

Step 3 – View shelter animals available online. This will give you an idea of the animals available, not just through our organisation but through all those making an effort re-home animals in need..

Step 4 – Submit our Adoption Application Form.

Step 5 – Bring home your new family member. It is important to try and make a smooth transition with your new companion in your home. View the information on our website, or visit other organisations online, to help you understand and reduce specific animal behaviour problems in a positive way.

Because Furever Pet Rescue does not have physical property (shelter) in which to house our animals in need, we are grateful for the assistance of those willing to act as foster homes until permanent homes can be found.

At Furever Pet Rescue, we are committed not only to rehabilitating and re-homing our dogs, but to finding a great match between each animal and their new family. That includes any foster homes into which the animals are placed while we source permanent homes.

We rely on our foster family volunteers to:
Provide love and care for the animals in preparation for their adoption.
Evaluate the animals and assist with matching them with a family during the adoption process.
Transport the animals to vet clinics for necessary health care.
Transport the animals to adoption events.

Fostering a dog or cat requires a big commitment of your time and resources. You must be certain that your own pets (if any) will accept and get along with foster animals. You must also ensure your pets are up-to-date on their vaccinations prior to taking in foster animals.

To become a foster parent for Furever Pet Rescue, you will need to meet our criteria. This includes a face-to-face meeting with you, as well as an inspection of your home and property.

As a non-profit organisation, Furever Pet Rescue is heavily reliant on the support of the communities it serves. We require volunteers to assist with a variety of services such as:

• Transportation of animals to/from veterinary care.
• Feeding of animals in designated areas.
• Collection of in-kind donations.

Report Animal Abuse
There has been some progress toward creating awareness in our communities that animals are sentient beings who share our capacity for emotions like love, pleasure and pain. But the sad reality is that many seemingly ordinary people still commit horrific acts of animal cruelty. We ask you to please speak for those who can’t speak for themselves and put an end to their suffering.

SPCA inspectors enforce the Animals Protection Act (APA) no. 71 of 1962. This legislation empowers the inspectors to instigate legal action against abusive and neglectful owners. If found guilty, the perpetrator could face up to three years imprisonment and/or a fine of R60 000.

If you know of any animals that is being neglected or treated badly, please contact the SPCA. You do not have to give your name when reporting animal cruelty if you are worried about adverse repercussions from neighbours.
