Unique Family Destination in Ballito – Cut Flowers to MTB.
Floriculture is set to put the ‘Garden’ back into KZN Garden Province.
A partnership deal with the DEDT (Department of Economic Development and Tourism) has created a unique hub of Flower Power and Pedal Power on KZN’s North Coast.
The Sugar Rush Adventure Precinct on the outskirts of Ballito offers a Win-Win-Win opportunity.
A hub of economic growth for locals, an adventure opportunity for the extreme junkie and a serene secret for the coffee addict. Kids looked after too!
Approached some years ago to research the flower component of the Dube Tradeport Agrizone, long time business partners Mark Johnson and Rose Juby were appalled to find that 80% of cut flowers are imported into an area labelled ‘The Garden Province’. Seeing an opportunity to grow the local economy at its root level, Johnson and Juby approached 25 year flower growing veteran Kim Hagemann and horticulturist Martin Alborough with an idea: Set up a cut flower growing and processing plant to supply retail stores and florists in the area.
The economic growth and local employment opportunities were boundless and so they approached the DEDT for financial backing. Floriculture was seeded and the growth has exceeded all expectations.
The 17Ha plot secured at Colisheen Estate is perfect for the flower growing component. Local push behind the Sugar Rush brand, Gill Von Bruddenbrock, joined the group and The Sugar Rush Adventure Precinct grew from there. Passionate about mountain cycling, avid nature lover and nurturing mentor for kids, Von Bruddenbrock has created a unique destination station.
The Precinct now offers a chic coffee shop, gift shop and adventure club for adults and children alike. The area is ideal for MTB and running trails and these are extended and upgraded continuously.
Local sports coach icon, Russell White uses the area for Russell White Coaching Academy and the area will soon be ‘home’ for local rugby team Ballito Dolphins.
If that is not enough, Ilembe District Winery is also housed here and visitors will soon be able to purchase locally grown wines too.
A win-win destination. Cut flowers at a fraction of the cost of retail stores, gift and coffee shop, adventure trails for bike or foot, play area for kids AND wine on tap…who would need anywhere else?
