Top Gear pushes Spar Women’s Race out
The Top Gear Festival, set to run over the weekend of 21 – 22 June, has forced organizers of the annual Spar Women’s Race to make alternate arrangements.
A clash of facilities has forced organizers, with relevant input from the KZN Athletic Road Commission, to secure a new date for the annual event..
The 2014 Spar Women’s Race in Durban will now take place on Sunday, 24th August.
The Road Race draws a field of more than 18,000 women each year promoting a healthful lifestyle for women. Although the race is a ‘Women’s Only’ event, the past has seen many men dressing in ‘drag’ to join the women-folk in this cheerful event.
The race has two options: a 5 km Run/Walk and a more professionally orientated 10 Km run.Thousands of women take to the streets of Durban, following a prescribed route from Sahara Kingsmead Stadium, along the coastal road of Battery Beach and returning past Moses Mabida Stadium to Kingsmead for the finish.
Although the race has a winners purse of R 10,000 with many smaller prizes across the various categories of runner, the majority of women take part in a spirit of comradeship and charity. A portion of the entry fee goes to the Independent Newspapers Community Projects.
Entries to the race have not yet opened, but can be expected to open in July.
