Umhlanga Flourishes under UIP
Areas of Umhlanga fall under a UIP. What is this and how does this benefit visitors and business owners in the area?
Introduction
uMhlanga is one of the most popular investment and tourist destinations on the South African coastline.
Located on the KZN North Coast and overlooking the warm Indian Ocean, uMhlanga offers visitors top quality accommodation; centrally located offices; kilometres of beaches; a wealth of outdoor adventure; world-class shopping, and an array of dining options, all within the well-secured and well-managed uMhlanga Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP).
What Value Does The UIP Bring To uMhlanga Rocks and to You?
The uMhlanga UIP is a long-term investment made by the area’s commercial and residential property owners to effectively secure and enhance property values and support business activity in the area. Through this investment and by partnering with the eThekwini Municipality, the UIP ensures that this key node delivers an exceptional experience of public space by improving the environment and quality of life for all the uMhlanga precinct’s users.
The UIP Structure
There are two UIPs or Special Ratings Areas (SRA) as they are official termed by the municipality namely, The uMhlanga Promenade UIP established in March 2003 and The Village UIP, established in July 2008. These UIPs, collectively known as the uMhlanga UIP represent 29 large erven. In addition to the two UIPs, there are a further two Associate Managed Areas namely the Southern Promenade Properties (SPP) – established 2004 and the Northern Promenade Properties (NPP) – established 2010. These areas represent approximately 42 large erven. The UIP partners with the eThekwini Municipality to ensure that this key node delivers an exceptional experience of public space.
The Work We Do
The UIP encourages municipal infrastructure upgrades and better municipal service, while providing funding for supplementary services. This means the UIP can implement structures that allow for:
- A professional urban management team
- Dedicated security, cleaning and maintenance teams focused on taking care of public space
- Place-marketing projects like branding, events, lighting and art
- Guided walks in the uMhlanga Nature Reserve and Hawaan Forest
- Projects to enhance public space like: a street pole poster management plan; pressure washing the precinct’s pavements; input into the municipal upgrade of the Southern Promenade and other areas which included: new kerbing / trees / benches / dustbins / taps / bollards / lights / paving / irrigation / boom gates / signage / handrails, and the installation of distance markers on the Promenade at 500m intervals.
Value-Added Services
The UIP has begun a programme of value-added services that are of benefit to the community that focuses around the UIP website www.umhlangauip.co.za and Mail Chimp Newsletters, that provide concise and relevant news on uMhlanga Rocks to members of the UIP and others who have a direct interest in the area.
These tools aim to set the UIP up as the ‘go to point’ for all things related to uMhlanga and thus include:
- A web-based 24-hour fault reporting system that allows for direct reporting of problems in public space
- A web-based business directory with 43 categories that lists some 300 businesses, facilities and service providers located in the UIP precinct.
- A web-based accommodation directory of all accommodation needs in the UIP
- The latest news and what is happening in uMhlanga
- A gallery of images showcasing the work done by the UIP and the best highlights of the precinct
- Monthly operational and security reports
