William Humphreys Art Gallery, Kimberley

The William Humphreys Art Gallery is one of South Africa’s most famous art museums. Opened in 1952, it is named after William Benbow Humphreys (1889 – 1965), who donated much of his personal  art collection from 16th and 17th Century Dutch and Flemish Old Masters, and other European artists, as well as antique furniture and other objects d’art.

Over time this core collection has been augmented and expanded with South African art collections, bequeathed, donated and leant by various individuals and institutions, as well as rare collections of Masters prints and drawings, and the Meyer collection of Oriental and European porcelain objets d’art.

The mission of WHAG is as follows: “The William Humphreys Art Gallery provides for the aesthetic and cultural needs of the local community it serves as well as of the people of South Africa. To this end it collects, preserves, documents, researches and exhibits works of art which represent the artistic heritage of all South Africans and utilises its assets for the edification, enrichment and enjoyment of the people. This it does by pursuing the highest standards of excellence and without regard to race, class, creed or gender.”

Prints and reproductions can be purchased.
