Wild Coast Amble – slackpacking in the Eastern Cape

Beachcombing on the Wild Coast Amble, Eastern CapeThe Wild Coast Amble is a 5-day, 55km slackpacking trail that originated from the success of South Africa’s original slackpacking trail, the Wild Coast meander. The trail follows the route of the Strandloper Hiking Trail, but instead of making use of the overnight huts on this trail, offers slackpackers luxury overnight accomodation in some of the Wild Coast’s most celebrated hotels.

Trennery’s Hotel, from where the trail starts, is one of the Wild Coast’s most well-loved hotels and, over the years, has produced some of South Africans’ favourite family-holiday memories. It truly is a holiday institution of its own in this magical part of South Africa, and hikers on the Wild Coast Amble will be glad to spend their first night here. And this is only where the adventure begins!

Meandering along endless stretches of unspoiled beach, exploring magical tidal rock pools and interacting with local Xhosa people (and their cattle!) are just some of the highlights of the trail. Of course, this is not to mention enjoying a leisurely pontoon trip up the great Kei River, and escaping to Inkwenkwezi Private Game Reserve for a well-deserved and leisurely game drive.

The combined magic of one of South Africa’s most pristine stretches of coastline and some of its favourite holiday resorts makes the Wild Coast Amble a perfect way to experience the true magic of the Wild Coast. Trail info

Getting there: Wild Coast Holiday Reservations offers transfers from East London to the start of the trail. See ‘trail info’ for more details.
