Wathaba Wilderness & Hiking Trails, Mpumalanga

Waterfall in the Wathaba Wilderness, Mpumalanga HighlandsThe beautiful Wathaba Wilderness area in Skurweberg Mountains in the Mpumalanga Highlands Meander Region offers hiking trails and excellent fishing, only 21km from is situated 20.8 km from Machadodorp, between Machadodorp and Badplaas.

Wathaba has been called a ‘slice of heaven’ with waterfalls, crystal streams and pools, and kloofs thick with indigenous vegetation, wild flowers, ferns, mosses, lichens, almost 90 different indigenous tree species, small mammals and prolific birdlife including the Bad Ibis and the Knysna Loerie (Turacao).

There are two marked hiking trails on Wathaba – the 4km Bosbok Trail, which is quite easy, and the slightly more difficult 10km Lynx Loop Trail, which features some climbing and the lovely Cascades Waterfall. Both trails feature bridges and ladders to make the going easier across the waterfalls and kloofs.

Accommodation is available in 3 hikers hut camps with basic amenities, good ablutions, donkey boilers, beds with matresses and braai areas (but no electricity and you must bring your own bedding), but day visitors and hikers are also welcomed on Wathaba.
