Wagendrift Nature Reserve, Drakensberg, KwaZulu-NatalWagendrift Nature Reserve is situated near the town of Estcourt and about 50km from Winterton near the Drakensberg in KwaZulu-Natal. This scenic reserve surrounds the Wagendrift Dam where boating and fishing are the primary activities. The wildlife and birdlife can be seen on a 3km self-guided walking trail winding along the Bushman’s River as well as on the Furrow trail which follows the course of an old irrigation channel built in 1903.

Moor Park, one of the oldest iron-age sites in KwaZulu-Natal dating back to AD 1300, can be seen from the Makhabeni Hill and on the southern side of the dam you will find large fossil beds with many fossilized trees lying on the ground.

Accommodation: There are two caravan/camping grounds with hot and cold water. All sites have power points. A Youth Centre, which may be used for a variety of educational or environmental activities, has four 18-bedded dormitories. Attached to each is a flatlet with two beds for use by teachers or guides. The centre hall has a fully-equipped kitchen with refrigerator and cooking facilities. A television set and video machine are available. Visitors have to provide their own food and essentials.

A four-bedded, fully-equipped chalet overlooking the water is also available.

Getting there: from Estcourt take the Ntabamschlope Road toward the N3. Continue under the N3 and follow the signboards to the reserve. From Winterton take the R74 toward the N3. Turn right onto the N3 and then off to the right on Ntabamschlope Road.
