Utrecht Balele Community Game Park, Battlefields
Utrecht Balele Community Game Park is the only game park in KwaZulu-Natal which completely surrounds a town. There are no fences between the park and Utrecht and the animals actually wander into town from time to time. The park is well stocked with eland, kudu, mountain reedbuck, zebra, nyala, blesbuck, impala, bushbuck, wildebeest and red hartebeest as well as predators such as caracal and leopard.
Habitats in the park include, wetlands, open vleis, acacia forest, grasslands and mountain plateau which makes it possible to support the variety of buck as well as prolific bird life. Bird watchers won’t be disappointed and will spot many different kingfishers, golden-breasted bunting, black-throated canary, bush blackcap and many different robins. There is a hide overlooking the wetlands. Altogether 250 bird species have been registered.
There are a number of guided walks and game drives through beautiful scenery and there is excellent accommodation at the Kiepersol Lodge situated high on the slopes overlooking the park in four luxury lodges and secluded safari tents all situated around a central lapa. There is also a rustic bush camp and an overnight hiking hut for those who want to rough it a little. There are 36 caravan sites all situated under shady trees, 3 chalets and 9 fisherman’s cottages on the water’s edge. All caravan stands are electrified and the chalets and cottages are fully equipped. The park is within walking distance of the country club which offers many sporting facilities.
