Thomas Baines Nature Reserve, Frontier Country, Eastern Cape

Thomas Baines Nature Reserve, GrahamstownThe Thomas Baines Nature Reserve, only 12km from Grahamstown, off the N2 towards Port Elizabeth, is ideal for a day trip to enjoy outdoor activities around the Settlers Dam recreation site which offers picnic and braai (barbeque) sites, bass fishing, sailing, board sailing, canoeing and non-power boating.

The reserve represents three of the major vegetation types of the Eastern Cape – Grassy Fynbos, Valley Bushveld and Afromontane Forests with wild olive, euphobia and white ironwood trees watered by the Palmiet River.

Birders will find plenty to spot with 175 species of birds recorded in the reserve including various types of kingfishers, and wildlife enthusiasts will not be disappointed either, with a herd of Cape buffalo, white rhino, numerous antelope such as eland, red hartebeest, bushbuck, kudu and impala as well as the mountain zebra and small mammals such as vervet monkeys and genets.

No Accommodation is available, except for basic camping facilities on the banks of Settlers Dam with limited ablutions or facilities for educational groups.
