The Nelson Mandela Museum, Qunu, Eastern Cape

Recently moved from Mthatha, the Nelson Mandela Museum is situated in Qunu, a small village that lies approximately 30km south of Mthatha just the N2 toward Butterworth, and that was Nelson Mandela’s childhood home.

‘No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.’
Nelson Mandela,Long Walk to Freedom (1995)

The Nelson Mandela Museum was founded 10 years to the day after his release. In addition to permanent exhibitions in Mthatha (closed for renovations till 2014) and at Qunu, the Museum also runs travelling exhibitions around South Africa, collaborating Nationally and Internationally with other institutions to achieve its objectives – objectives in exhibiting Nelson Mandela’s life, heritage and legacy, and based on spreading knowledge, appreciation, equality, respect…and love for one another irrespective of skin colour – for freedom, democracy and peace.
