The Boyden Observatory, Bloemfontein
The Boyden Observatory just outside Bloemfontein is “an educational hub for the public and schools in central South Africa.” If you find yourself in Bloemfontein in between May and August, take the opportunity to stargaze through South Africa’s third largest telescope, and enjoy the beauty of the Southern Hemisphere’s Milky Way – at its brightest and most awe-inspiring on cloudless crisp winter evenings in the dry Free State.
The Observatory is situated 26 km east of Bloemfontein in the lovely surroundings of The Boyden Hill’s.
The Observatory holds regular open evenings and tours of the facility which includes both modern and classical astronomical equipment harking back to the 1920’s when the Observatory was first established.
There is also a science centre and library.

Getting there: The Boyden Observatory is situated next to the Maselspoort Holiday Resort just outside Bloemfontein just off the N8 – near Bloemfontein airport.
