From the South African National Drag Racing Championship to who is best on the street, the excellent facility at Tarlton, between Krugersdorp and Magaliesburg provides the ideal venue for the petrolhead. Whether you are a spectator or participant, the thrill of screeching tyres, flaming exhausts, records and accidents are all part of the scene.
Ear plugs are a must and the camera is handy when you get to see a jet car meltdown – that’s when a car is placed inconveniently behind a jet car and the flames from the jet engine literally melt the car.
Jet dragsters can go from 0 to 450km/h in six seconds and have to deploy a parachute to help slow the car down. There’s a class of dragsters called “funny cars” which are basically a huge engine with a very light carbon fibre body attached. These cars produce up to 8000hp, 6G’s of force and achieve speeds in excess of 400km/h. Street to Strip is drag racing for street cars and if you own a car and have the balls – then you too can race. And don’t think that cyclists can’t participate. There are races for you too!
