“The Best Right Hand Surf Break in the World”: SUPERTUBES
‘Supers’ is undoubtedly one of the best, some would say the best, right-hand surf break on the planet. There are some other breaks in J-Bay, but none that compare to Supertubes, and none that rate on the International scale in the same way.
Surfing in J-Bay is all about Supertubes, the little backpacker filled round-about parking lot behind the boardwalk onto the beach, the aloe plants that make pictures of Supers instantly recognisable even to non-surfers, beach babes, and endless perfectly spaced rolling sets off a point break that often define what perfect waves look like, and that can get big enough to pull in the best of the best in surfing.
The best time to surf Supertubes is from April to August. The water can be cold (12- 15 deg), so a wetsuit is essential. It can run at six to eight feet on a low tide, making it a dangerous wipe-out and getting out to the backline can be tricky.The paddle out involves balance-walking over sharp rocks and getting out into the channel before you get washed back onto them. The water is often crowded, and locals have a reputation for being a little proprietary over ‘their break’. Don’t hustle them, be very nice if they drop in on you, don’t do it to them under any circumstances, and you will leave J-Bay with friends and having got to ride one of the world’s best point breaks.
If you are not an experienced surfer head down to one of J-Bay’s other breaks (though not Boneyards – the name says it all). If you are – get ready to take on a fast and furious right-hander that can run for 800 metres. Not that you’d get all the way down anyway, but you can try to get to the last section, aptly called ‘Impossibles’, if you are really, really good…
