SOUTH HILL
South Hill wine farm is situated on the cool mountain plateau of Elgin, right in the heart of apple country, about eight kilometers from the N2 highway along the Valley Road. Known for its excellent wines, South Hill is surrounded by the Kogelberg mountains, orchards, fynbos and indigenous trees.
This exclusive boutique wine farm, under 28ha of vines, has a selection of sites, each ideal for a specific varietal – from the gentle north slopes which, being warmer, are ideally suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, to steep south facing blocks, perfect for varieties which require a very cool ripening season such as Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc. If the general climate of Elgin is considered uniquely well suited to the growing of premium quality grapes, then the sub-climate on South Hill is even more so. South Hill is in a rain shadow, which allows for greater manipulation of the vines in the pursuit of excellent quality fruit.
The Gallery Restaurant at South Hill with its modern furnishings is set in an art gallery which houses a variety of artworks that include paintings, small and large scale sculptures, photography, ceramics and mixed medium works, as well as selected conceptual work, and has excellent views from its veranda and the lawned terraces.
Artisan lunches are served every Wednesday to Sunday. Expect light and easy dishes dependent on what’s readily available from the kitchen garden together with local produce from the beautiful Elgin Valley, all washed down with the range of delicious South Hill wines. Diners can spend a leisurely afternoon enjoying their meal and wine, or playing boules or croquet.
Although trained in a classical, formal schooling – Chef Damian Dearlove, also called the tattooed chef, is very much influenced by all his travels and time spent living in, amongst other places, Italy, Switzerland, New Zealand, Thailand, France and South Africa. He doesn’t feel that any of these experiences have defined his food in any one particular style but are experiences that he can pull on at any time to create his own unique style.
The farm is also home to a wonderful wedding and event venue for anyone wanting to celebrate a wedding or special occasion in idyllic surrounds. The venue can accommodate up to 80 guests inside (with a dance floor) and up to 240 guests under canopy, outside on the lawn.
South Hill houses a five bedroom en suite luxury villa, beautifully and individually decorated with doors opening out on to a private patio, and with views over the pool and surrouding vineyards, as well as a honeymoon cottage, the Pump House, situated in the seclusion of an indigenous garden and fynbos, on the banks of a large dam surrounded by Shiraz vineyards.
