Soetdoring Dam Nature Reserve, Goldfields, Free State

Situated 45 kms from Bloemfontein in the Goldfields region of the Free State, the 7500ha Soetdoring Dam Nature Reserve hosts herds of eland, springbok, zebra, wildebeest among other species in the open grasslands, and you can also see the majestic Kudu as well as Impala and small buck species in the bush areas.

The Reserve also has packs of wild dogs and lions in an enclosed drive-through ‘predator park’.

Angling is permitted on the dam, and there are designated braai areas on the banks of the dam and the Modder River that feeds it.

The Soetdoring Dam is a breeding ground for Fish and Martial Eagles and also hosts many other species of water-birds, and the Reserve is popular bird-watching spot featured in SA Birding guides.

1 day hiking trails along the Modder River are rated as easy/family hikes, and there is accommodation on the Reserve in a bush camp with facilities and ablutions and a basic camping area (without electricity)
