Sishen Golf Club, Kathu, Northern Cape

Sishen Golf Club, Kathu, Northern CapeSishen Golf Course, in the remote town of Kathu, Northern Cape, is situated in a truly unique setting  – the course winds its way through a 500 hectare Camelthorn forest on the edge of the Kalahari Desert.

Sishen’s par 72, 18-hole course is currently rated in the top 20 best golf courses in South Africa and is truly a hidden gem. Considering its surroundings, its lush green fairways and greens have surprised many a visitor to this arid region.

Built and maintained by Sishen Iron Ore mine and officially opened in 1979, this is the last course designed by Robert (Bob) Grimsdell, which he unfortunately could not see completed. Some of the world’s longest ore trains travel through harsh territory to offload their precious cargo at Saldanha Bay. Nothing can prevent visitors from being overawed by the sheer size of one of the world’s largest open-cast iron mines, dwarfing giant ore trucks bearing up to 170 tons of ore each load.

Being situated off the beaten track, the course is blissfully un-congested and visitors are always assured of getting a game here. The course is host to the annual Kalahari Classic, on the winter leg of the Vodacom SA Tour. The club also hosts the Griqualand West Open each year, one of the more prestigious events on the Amateur calendar.

From Johannesburg travel approximately 600km on the N14 to Upington. 50kms past the town of Kuruman you will reach the town of Kathu. Turn right towards Kathu and the golf course is on the outskirts of Kathu. Any day, except Christmas & New Years. Sishen Golf Club Website.
