Self Drive Route from Calitzdorp on the R62 to Oudtshoorn
The 197km drive from Calitzdorp via Nels Valley to Prince Albert over the Swartberg Pass is probably one of the most rugged, amazing drives you will do anywhere in the world.
Then drive from Prince Albert to Oudtshoorn through Meiringspoort and De Rust and you will be totally speechless.
From Calitzdorp, the towering Swartberg, with its unusual red colored rocks, is a constant backdrop on your left, as you pass ostrich farms, fertile green valleys and beautiful scenery.
Eventually you arrive at a T-junction at which you can decide whether to proceed to Prince Albert over the magnificent Swartberg Pass and maybe stay the night before driving to Oudtshoorn via De Rust through the Meiringspoort pass.
If you do the whole route it is approximately 200 km, but because it is mainly on gravel roads (up to Prince Albert) and over dramatic passes, it is best driven at a leisurely pace. Please note that caravans are not allowed on the Swartberg pass. The road is all passable with a normal car, but low profile tyres are not recommended.

About 13 kms from Calitzdorp, you turn off left to Kruis River and the Nels River Valley which emerges at the junction of the R328 to the Cango Caves and Swartberg Pass. At this point, turn right for Oudtshoorn or left if you would like to go to Prince Albert.
From Prince Albert, take the R407 (N12) to Meiringspoort and De Rust and then drive to Oudtshoorn. De Rust is a quaint little village where you could have a cuppa.
