Selati Game Reserve, Limpopo – Volunteering in Africa

The 30 000ha Selati Private Game Reserve lies just north of the Olifants River, between the Limpopo Drakensberg escarpment and the Kruger National Park, and forms part of the Greater Kruger Park area. This reserve offers a minimum 2 week authentic educational and participatory wildlife experience through a hands on volunteer programme no tourist frills at all, but high on education and experience of the African landscape and wildlife.

The volunteer programme on Selati focuses on the Lion pride, but there are over 25 large mammal species on the reserve including the Big 5, cheetah, zebra, giraffe and many species of antelope, small and large. The reserve also features prolific and beautiful birdlife.

Selati is also known for the indigenous Sable antelope – a particularly handsome species of antelope with a distinctive sable or black coat s(males) and white faces – hunted almost to extinction in many parts of Southern Africa for their coats and horns.

The Reserve has a unique terrain with many interesting looking geological formations throughout, and a typical lowveld variety of veld types is complemented by the 230 million year old Modjaji Cycad species, a living fossil tree species that is found nowhere else in the world and can grown to 13m in height.

Selati is totally non-commercial. It is the almagamation of several private game farms, and its proclamation in 2003 was for the restoration of the natural habitat of the area. The LEO AFRICA volunteer programme conducts game management on the reserve. Accommodation for volunteers is at the Selati Camp – made up of basic dome tents with communal bathroom facilities. The camp is unfenced so be prepared for the pad of lions and gentle footfalls of elephant around your tent at night.

The nearest towns are Gravelotte, Hoedspruit and Phalaborwa.
