SanWild Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, Gravelotte, Limpopo
The SanWild Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre in Gravelotte, Limpopo is a wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centre, game reserve and safe haven for wildlife rescued from ‘canned hunting’ operations as well as other displaced and injured wildlife.
The Sanctuary is funded partly through tourism, offering excellent luxury bush lodge accommodation on the reserve, game drives and tours to the Kruger National Park and other beautiful areas of the Limpopo Province.
The 6000ha reserve is home to great variety of species, including elephant and large predators such as lion, leopard and cheetah. There are also hippos, giraffe and a full spectrum of antelope species – from little steenbokke to majestic waterbuck, nyala to kudu and blue wildebeest.
Many animals, such as the lions, have been rescued from canned hunting operations, of which there are many in South Africa. The lions are bred on game farms, often featuring as ‘play with lion cub’ tourist attractions, then released as adults to be shot in organised hunts. These animals cannot survive in the wild, and so do not roam free on the reserve. They are kept in a special section, fed and looked after – an operation that requires considerable private funding in addition to that generated by the bush camps.
