Royal Natal National Park, Drakensberg, KwaZulu-Natal

Hiking in the Royal Natal National ParkThe Royal Natal National Park offers guests a sublime opportunity to explore the heart of the magnificent Drakensberg mountain range. Part of the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park, this 8094 Ha mountain wonderland was named after the British Royal Family visit in 1947.

The Drakensberg is the walking and hiking mecca of South Africa, and the Royal Natal National Park is home to a number of the range’s most renowned features. These include the Mont-aux-Sources peak and the  spectacular Drakensberg Amphitheatre, a sheer basalt wall rising over 700m above the “little Berg”. The 500m high Tugela Falls, amongst the highest in the world, cascades over the Amphitheatre. Interestingly, Mont-aux-Sources is where the Orange River starts its incredible journey west across South Africa to the Atlantic Ocean.

Walking and hiking in this area can be enjoyed on a number of routes, ranging from half-day to full-day or even multi-day trails.

Camping and caravaninning can be enjoyed at two popular sites here, from where visitors can also explore the Drakensberg on horseback. Self-catering accommodation is also available. Thendele is one of Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife’s most popular resorts.

Getting there: from Durban, take the N3 to Harrismith. Just before Harrismith, turn off onto the R74 going to Bergville. Follow this road through Bergville to Langkloof, and then look out for signs to the Royal Natal National Park.
