Rooipoort Private Nature Reserve, Kimberley, Northern Cape

Rooipoort Nature Reserve, Kimberley, Northern Cape

Rooipoort Nature Reserve is one of the earliest nature conservation areas in South Africa. It was established in 1893 and is owned by De Beers Consolidated Mines. The reserve was declared the fourth South African Natural Heritage Site in 1985 and stretches across 40 000 hectares along a 32 km river frontage on the banks of the Vaal River. It is one of the largest private reserves in the country. Rooipoort is set in the transition zone between the Karoo, Kalahari and grassland zones and boasts 310 bird species.

A notable feature on Rooipoort is the historic Shooting Box built in 1899. The entire building was shipped over from England to Cape Town in kit form, then transported to Rooipoort by ox wagon and erected at a cost of £590 – a lot of money at the time!

Not only is the setting beautiful, stocked with roan, sable and other antelope and buffalo, as well as numerous small mammals, but there is a choice of activities just right for the whole family. Fishing along the river; bird watching; climbing the koppie at Bushman Fountain to view thousands of petroglyphs such as lion, hippo and rhino; canoeing, and for those who just want to chill, a quiet relaxing spot to get away from the the hustle and bustle of city life.

Accommodation options include the “Shooting Box,” which makes for a real family venue, six bedrooms, two separate bathrooms, central kitchen, dining room and lounge. This magnificent historical gem is available to families, groups and to companies looking for a private meeting venue.

The Shooting Box Cottage sleeps four adults comfortably with two separate bedrooms, separate toilet, shower and bath, kitchenette and dining room.

The stunningly beautiful luxury safari camp is a must for those looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life. The Safari Camp sleeps sixteen adults comfortably, central boma, dining room and kitchen. The tents offer under-floor heating in the bathrooms as well as electricity – a lot of comfort with a touch of rustic.
