Roodepoort Museum, Johannesburg

Roodepoort MuseumRoodepoort has a long and varied history, from the discovery of gold in 1884, to becoming a city in 1977. The Roodepoort Museum tracks this rush and all the historical details that make up what Roodepoort is today. Here you will learn about the geology of the Witwatersrand and how mined gold from these reefs created a unique history.

Set in the Roodepoort Civic Centre on Christiaan de Wet Road. The museum showcases mining paraphernalia as well as a Victorian house displaying the previous residents’ more opulent lifestyle after the discovery of gold. The décor is opulent and shows off inventions such as the gramophone and early radio. The displays of 1920s and 1930s sitting rooms are also worth exploring, as they reveal changes in living conditions influenced by World War I.

Art nouveau and art deco are the major influencing styles. Beautiful international objects are on display, including decorative glass and porcelain from producers such as Royal Doulton, Meissen, Rosenthal, Royal Worcester, Wedgewood and Lalique – a collection rarely seen elsewhere.

Aside from these permanent exhibitions, the museum hosts temporary exhibits such as Go-for- Gold, which is centred on precious metal and features a range of items, including gold nuggets. A collection of Victorian jewellery has also been on display at the museum.
