Rockwood, Karkloof Nature Reserve, Midlands Meander

 

Karkloof Nature Reserve, Midlands, KwaZulu-Natal

Karkloof Nature Reserve is situated in the Midlands of KwaZulu-Natal between Mooi River and Howick. This 2800ha reserve is of great ecological importance because of its biodiversity and the fact that it consists of mist belt forest and grassland resulting in a significant number of endemic and near-endemic species such as the rare Karkloof Blue Butterfly and a sub-species of the crested guinea fowl.

The reserve was created in 1983 a long-term agreement was reached between Timothy Hancock and Ezemvelo KZNWildlife for the joint development and management of the reserve. A number of farms have been consolidated into the reserve, either being bought by Ezemvelo, the Hancocks or leased. Rockwood Leisure, owned by the Hancocks, is responsible for the commercial development of the reserve and Ezemvelo KWildlife for the management of the reserve.

Accommodation at Rockwood Lodges consists of a Forest Lodge, a Mountain Lodge, a Farm Cottage and Farm House.

Activities in the area include mountain biking, the Karkloof Canopy Tour, fishing, swimming in the river and the dams, birding, game viewing and hiking.

Getting there: from Durban, take the N3 going through Pinetown to Howick. Here, look out for signs to the Rockwood Nature Reserve, and follow them to the reserve’s entrance.
