Raka Wines, Stanford, Overberg
Raka Wines, on the farm Remhoogte, in the Kleinrivier valley near Stanford, is the dream child of Piet Dreyer, and the whole Dreyer family.
With the rich blessing of earth and elements, the help of a dedicated workforce, the enthusiasm of winemaker Josef Dreyer and the advantages of a modern gravity flow cellar, Raka has produced award-winning wines.
The first prize of the Michelangelo International Wine Competition of 2008 was won by Raka Biography Shiraz 2007 out of 1438 entrants and 286 Producers.
It all started in 1999 when the Dreyers planted 10 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Shiraz. Since then a few hectares were added every year, and the 68 hectares on the farm at present, includes plantings of Pinotage, Sangiovese, Viognier, Mourvedre, Petit Verdot and also larger plantings of Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Sauvignon Blanc, making the farm self-sufficient for the different blends required.
Situated on the Klein River, the farm has north and south facing slopes, a variety of soil types and the cool Atlantic breezes to reduce the summer heat.
Raka’s top wines are Biography Shiraz, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Figurehead, a Cape Blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Pinotage, Quinary – Bordeaux style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec-Cabernet Sauvignon-based, the composition may vary slightly from vintage to vintage as we always strive to make the best possible blend, Barrel Select Merlot – single variety Merlot blended from a selection of the best barrels of the vintage.
The mid-range wines are Pinotage, Sangiovese, Sauvignon blanc, Shannonea –white blend named after indigenous health Erica Shannonea, Rose –popular blend of a variety of red grapes (dry), Spliced – this wine varies in composition from vintage to vintage, depending on the availability of cultivars. It is an easier drinking wine and oaked for 12 months.
The Raka Tasting Room is open Monday to Friday, 09h00 – 16h30: December to January Saturday 10h00 – 15h00: Closed on Sundays, Good Friday & Christmas Day: Out of season please phone ahead.
Directions: From Cape Town take the N2 to Caledon. Take the Caledon-Bredasdorp road (R316) towards Bredasdorp. After 29km turn right onto the R326 towards Stanford. At exactly 6km from the intersection, Raka is on your left.
Via Hermanus: Take the R43 from Hermanus to Stanford. At Stanford turn right onto the R326 towards Riviersonderend. After 17km, Raka will be on your right.
