Play with Lion Cubs at The Lion Park, Johannesburg

Play with the lion cubs, feed the giraffe and take the cheetah for a walk…all at the Lion Park north of the city of Johannesburg.

The Lion Park is a very worthwhile tourist attraction for visitors to Gauteng. The best part is that, unlike at most game reserves, you are guaranteed an encounter with lions, and you can cuddle lion cubs in a special enclosure, feed big friendly giraffe…and get walked on a leash by a cheetah.

In addition to the lions and cheetah, you can see wild dogs, brown and spotted hyenas, leopards, a very rare black leopard (remember Bagheera from the story ‘Mowgli’?) and a variety of game.

There are more than 80 lions at the park, including rare white lions. The lions are kept in three separated large free-roaming enclosures and both day and night game drives in a safari vehicle are offered through the enclosures, as well as self-drive safaris. Night game drives are an amazing way to experience nocturnal predators. The lions are often ‘lazy’ during the day and less active than at night, and several other species tend also to wake up at sunset.

Accommodation is offered in luxury safari tents, although the Lion Park is open until 9pm. There is a restaurant on site, or visitors can take along a picnic basket and so the SA thing – light up the barbecue and have a braai in the red light of the setting African sun, with the odd lion’s roar or hyena cackle in the background…

The Lion Park is a great and inexpensive day out for the family, and a sure fire hit for tourists who want to go home with picture of a lion cub sitting in their lap and a cheetah walking by their side.

Hours:Thursday, Friday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday 8.30am to 6pm; Saturday and Sunday 8am to 8pm.
