Piekenierskloof Pass, Citrusdal

The modern Piekenierskloof Pass heading up the Olifants River mountainsThe Piekenierskloof Pass in the Cederberg rises steadily up the Olifants River mountains and affords the traveler lovely views over the Swartland valley of wheat and citrus farms. The existence of the pass today is thanks to legendary South African road engineer Thomas Bain, and his old residence can be seen in a valley beside the road. The best view across the Olifants River valley to the Cederberg mountains is from the garden at Hebron, a guest-house and farmstall beside the road, just after the descent to Citrusdal begins.

Getting there: the Piekenierskloof Pass is a section of the N7 road from Cape town to Citrusdal. It rises up the Olifants River mountains and descends into Citrusdal.
