Palmiet Nature Reserve Hikes, Westville, Durban

Palmiet Nature Reserve, Westville, DurbanPalmiet Nature Reserve is situated in Westville about 10 km from Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. The reserve is about 90 ha in extent and is predominantly characterized by the Palmiet River winding its way through a gorge with rugged terrain and cliffs.

There are 6 interlinked hiking trails in the reserve from 10 minutes to 2 hours in length. There is a guided trail every 1st Sunday of the month. The trails cover most of the reserve and all of the different eco-systems within it. The Palmiet Trail will take you along the river through coastal forest and  sandstone cliffs where you will see some interesting trees clinging to the steep slopes. Some of the bridges have been washed away but you can do some boulder hopping to cross where necessary.

The trails are well marked and not difficult although there are some steep slopes. The network of trails will take you through coastal and riverine forest, grasslands and cliffs.

Entrance is free and you can book the picnic sites. Guided walks can also be arranged by appointment.
