Org de Rac Organic Wine Estate, Swartland, Western Cape
Org de Rac Organic Wine Estate is one of the few 100% organic wine farms in South Africa situated near Piketberg in a particularly beautiful part of the Swartland. Adding to the beauty of the estate are fields of lavender, rosemary as well as olive groves.
The vines are grown in organically fertilized soil with no pesticides, herbicides or fungicides being used and relying on the health of the plants to protect themselves from attack. The vineyards are planted to take full advantage of the prevailing winds to allow for natural drying of the leaves. Cover crops planted between rows provide additional organic nutrition, while earthworms bred in the vermiculture facility aerate and enrich the soil, improving its living quality. The environmentally friendly pest-control methods include a small army of ducks that patrols the vineyards, ridding the vines of snails and insects.
The sustainable farming methods ensures a constant supply of healthy grapes to the winery where organic principles are adhered to in the winemaking process. No chemical additives are allowed and half the amount of sulphur compared to conventional wines is added. Bottling and labeling are done under the same roof to ensure that full control is maintained over the entire process.
The estate produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz and a Merlot Rosé and is open for tasting at the following times:
Monday to Friday 09h00 – 17h00 and Saturdays 09h00 – 13h00
