Oliewenhuis Art Museum

A mosaic sculpture at the Oliewenhuis Art Museum in Bloemfontein, South AfricaThe Oliewenhuis Art Museum in Bloemfontein is a satellite of the National Museum, but is also a well known attraction in its own right.

The ‘Oliewenhuis’ is a beautiful historic Cape Dutch building with extensive gardens and even walking trails. The house was once the residence of the Governer General of the Union of South Africa, but was converted to a art museum in 1985.

The interior displays an excellent collection of South African art, and the gardens display sculptures – both collection and project pieces. There are is a permanent private art collection and regular temporary exhibitions feauturing the works of South African artists from across the country and across art media disciplines, including photographic.

The Gardens are beautiful and ideal for picnics, but there is a very good restaurant. Tripadvisor reviews for the museum, gardens and restaurant are all excellent! Well worth a visit…
