Mpenjati Nature Reserve, Margate, KwaZulu-Natal
Mpenjati Nature Reserve lies about 20 Km south of the south coast town of Margate in KwaZulu-Natal. It is rather small at just 66 ha but don’t let this put you off. It is characterized by wetlands, dune forest, grasslands and beach all interlinked in a unique ecosystem.
There are a number of hikes in the reserve where you can enjoy the abundant flora and fauna and take in the beautiful views from the viewing platforms along the way.
Birding is particularly rewarding – keep a sharp eye out for the elusive Narina trogon and Knysna and purple crested Turaco. You should also come across the Cape clawless otter and the large grey mongoose as well as bushbuck, blue, red and grey duiker.
There are picnic spots and a childrens’ playground but no accommodation.
