Mountain Zebra National Park, Cradock, Eastern Cape

The Mountain Zebra National Park near Cradock in the Eastern Cape was originally proclaimed to save a specific species. In the early part of the last century the Cape Mountain Zebra faced extinction like its cousin the Quagga, but this distinct species of Zebra was saved in the nick of time by the proclamation of this National Park in the Karoo Bankberg in 1937. A herd of around 400 now roam the 28,412ha reserve.

The Reserve encompasses the mountainous foothills of the Bankberg, but also much rolling grassland and scrub plains.

Other animals that can be seen in the reserve include the cheetah, Cape buffalo, black rhino, eland, black wildebeest, red hartebeest, gemsbok, mountain reedbuck and grey rhebok and the African Caracal or Rooikat.

Though Cape Mountain Zebra can be seen in some other reserves, with a total no. of around 1000 animals, the Mountain Zebra NP herd is the largest in existence; they are still considered highly endangered.

There are a number of accommodation options available on the reserve, from the Doornhoek Guesthouse, to self-catering cottages, to camping and mountain huts. There are also facilities for day visitors, wedding and conference facilities, a small shop and an a la a carte restaurant.

Activities available on the reserve include several 4×4 trails, hiking trails and morning and evening guided game drives.
