Mountain Sanctuary Park, Magaliesberg
The Mountain Sanctuary Park is a 1000ha privately owned Nature Reserve 120km west from Johannesburg, in the magnificent Magaliesburg area. The reserve offers a number of activities geared toward Gauteng city dwellers in need of peace and relaxation as much as it is toward tourists.
Activities at the Mountain Sanctuary Park include game viewing, hiking (both off and on designated trails, the longest of the latter being an 8 hour day hike trail), abseiling and rock climbing, and mountain biking. If you do nothing else between braaing and sitting in the sun, you can walk to several natural rock pools (the Tonquani Rock Pools) for a swim in crystal clear mountain spring water.
Besides the activities offered, the Mountain Sanctuary Park is a camper’s haven with 30 camp sites over the reserve. Other accommodations on the reserve are self-catering chalets and log cabins. Facilities include a lapa, pool, freezer facilities and a shop. The chalets and log cabins are fully equipped except for bedding.
Getting there: Take the R512 (past Lanseria). At the Broederstroom T-junction turn LEFT. After Pecanwood turn RIGHT at the SUN-CITY / BRITS turn-off. At the T-junction turn RIGHT towards BRITS / SUN CITY.At the 4-way stop (ENGEN on right) turn LEFT towards SUN CITY. Follow this road for about 38km past Majakaneng, Mooinooi and Buffelspoort. After Buffelspoort turn LEFT at the 3-way stop. After about 10km turn LEFT towards MAANHAARRAND. Follow the MOUNTAIN SANCTUARY PARK SIGNS.
