Mountain Biking on the Groundcover Trail, Curry’s Post
This area has some great single-track rides made by the locals, so it’s definitely worth it to try and hook up with some local riders to avoid getting lost.
This particular ride is right in the heart of the Midlands Meander, and is great for cyclists who like to hit the pause button and stop at any and every opportunity along the way. The ride starts at Groundcover Leather Company, whose owner is a mountain-biking fanatic. Being in the Midlands Meander, the ride winds through some tough uphills and rewarding downhills, but this is really a ride to enjoy and not whizz through. There are innumerable places to stop for refreshments here, and one doesn’t have to look too hard to find them, as they are generally on the side of the road. Riders are always warmly welcomed and the stories you hear from shop and stall owners are priceless to say the least.
Info: Intermediate 40km circuit route. Follows public dirt road with short sections of tar, no permit required. Maps available from any Midlands Meander establishment. Ridden slowly takes 5hrs. Ridden fast takes about 2.5hrs.
Getting there: from Durban, take the N3 to Howick. Exit at the R107 Curry’s Post road. Look out for Groundcover Leather Company, which is where the trail starts.
