Mountain Biking at Camp Shaka, Umhlali, Kwazulu-Natal
The trails here are tough, seeing as the only way out from Camp Shaka is up. For cycle tourists, there’s a scenic 35-km cruise to Ballito, and riders will enjoy the downhill sections for a large portion of the way. The quiet, tarred road at the end of the ride leads to a refreshing dip in the sea. For off-road riders, there’s a 7km jeep track down the valley, which is sandwiched between cane fields and gum-tree plantations. This road eventually joins up with the dirt road to Umhlali.
Info: 7km off-road and 35km dirt and tar route. Ride is on private property, day visitors by prior arrangement.
Getting there: Camp Shaka is 70km from Durban CBD and 30km inland from Umhlali.
