Mosamane Hiking Trail, Rosendal, Free State
The Mosamane Hiking Trail on the Beatrix Farm 10km outside of Rosendal in the Eastern Free State is a 1 day but very pretty and worthwile trail that offers a day 2 of ‘geocaching’.
The main feature of this trail is the geology through which it passes. The 2 million year old Witteberg range is named after the snow that coats it in winter, but underneath the winter white, foothills of Molento sandstone are yellow and orange, with what was once lava piled in distinct layers. Erosion of this sandstone has created many interesting features, shapes and formations in outcrops, overhangs and ‘dongas’ (dips). The trail moves through these formations, up and down cliffs, through falls and dongas. Some areas of the trail involve wooden ladders and others are aided by railings.
Should you choose to stay overnight, or do the second day ‘geocaching trail’, accommodation is provided at ‘base camp’ in a rustic lodge that sleeps 19 people. There is no electricity, but hot water is provided through a ‘donkey system’ to ablutions. There is also a covered sundowner area (beautiful views), braai facilities, and a kitchen with fridge and a gas stove. There is also space here to camp or park a 4×4 caravan.
Mosamane means ‘ground squirrel’ and is named after the furry critters that frequent the area. It is an ‘easy’ 6 hour trail, but not a family trail as there are quite a few steep uphills along narrow paths. The best time of year to do this trail is spring and summer as there is a proliferation of delicate mountain flora and bird-life, and in winter temperatures can get very cold. The Mosamane trail is a recognised birding route.
Many areas of Mosamane are suitable for mountain-biking and 4×4.
