Moniki Belgian Chocolates,Tulbagh
Niki de Wolf van Kooij, was born in South Africa, but lived in Holland for most her life. She came out to Tulbagh for her wedding and realised she wanted to come back to her roots.
Niki started her Belgian chocolate-making enterprise on her farm in Tulbagh, but now that the business has become so popular, she has moved into town to make it easier for visitors to sample her delicious chocolate delights.
In the shop, a national monument called Honey Oaks, you can savour exquisite handcrafted chocolates with excellent coffee, hot chocolate and teas, al fresco or inside. The chocolates are made on the premises, so you can watch how it is done.
Niki’s range includes her take on contemporary classics as well as her own divine creations – she believes in only the best ingredients, and the mouth watering list of what she puts into the chocolates will give any chocoholic goose bumps.
The emphasis is on making handmade high quality products using only the best raw and fresh ingredients, like butter, fresh cream, nuts and herbs and spices like lavender, rosemary, cardamom, saffron, ginger, black pepper and cinnamon.
A good chocolate distinguishes itself by its cacao percentage. Niki uses mostly Belgian coverture chocolate that contains 70 % cacao. This is in line with the European style of making chocolate. The result is a chocolate with an intensive flavour and a lingering aftertaste. A feast for the taste buds!
Groups can book tours of the complete chocolate making process, participate in a truffle-making workshop or can experience wine and chocolate parings. Booking is essential.
