Meerendal Wine Estate is situated on the slopes of the Tygerberg Hills about 20 minutes from the CBD of Cape Town. Breezes from the cold Atlantic ocean, a mere 15Km to the west, create the perfect conditions for slow ripening so essential for retaining flavour. The deep red soils and water retentive properties of the clay base complete the ideal conditions.
The estate has a long history going back to 1702 when Cape Governor, Willem Adriaan van der Stel granted the land to Jan Meerendal. Twelve years later, Meerland’s widow, Christina Stans, had successfully cultivated 60 000 vines on the farm. The estate was one of the first to plant Pinotage in 1955, the first wines from this South African variety going to market in 1969. Apart from the Pinotage, the estate produces a number of award winning wines including Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Shiraz, Merlot and Pinot Noir.
The 300 year old legend of Meerendal’s wine and bread continues to this day in the Meerendal’s restaurant. It’s where their chefs turn Meerendal’s fresh produce into moments of magic, filled with natural flavour and the wonder of outstanding preparation, inspired presentation and a love of cooking. With its stunning views over the vineyards and the Boland mountains, Meerendal is the ideal venue for weddings, launches, private functions, meetings and events .
