McGregor Hiking Trails, Breede River, Western Cape
The scenery around McGregor in the Breede River Valley, Western Cape, is really beautiful, and to hike this country is one of life’s real pleasures. From easy walks to the Boesmanskloof 15km hike, you are spoiled for choice.
The Kleinberg Trail
This is an easy, 2hr walk up Badge Hill – you can spot the hill from the village, as it carries the McGregor crest. To get there you leave McGregor by the old Robertson dirt road, pass the brick works, and the sign posted trail starts on the right. No need to drive to the start of the trail; walking out from the village is half the fun!
Permits for all hikes, including the hike from McGregor to Greyton, are available from the McGregor tourism office in Voortrekker Street. They also hire bikes. Office hours: Mondays to Fridays 9am – 1pm 2pm – 4.30pm: Sat /Sun / Public Hols. 9am – 2pm: Phone: +27 (0)23 625 1954: Email.
Kransberg Nature Reserve Hiking Trail
Here you will see interesting vegetation, plenty of birds and magnificent views of the surrounding hills as well as the dam and the village. There are six short walks from the entrances in Smit, Van Reenen and Voortrekker Streets.
Hiking in the Vrolikheid Nature Reserve
In the Vrolikheid Nature Reserve, the landscape is rugged and striking with its geology of sandstone and underlying shale formations. It is beautiful for hiking, but very hot in the middle of summer.
Klipspringer, grysbok, grey rhebuck and springbok are common at Vrolijkheid. Caracal (rooikat) also occur but are rarely seen. There are 175 recorded bird species.
Boesmanskloof Hike from McGregor to Greyton
The Boesmanskloof is an extremely popular hike in the Riviersonderend Mountains.
The hike of 15km is through a cutting in the rugged mountains and links Greyton to McGregor.
